Chili And Pepper Market Size in Ghana
The Ghanian chili and pepper market rose slightly to $X in 2022, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a slight contraction. Chili and pepper consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Chili And Pepper Production in Ghana
In value terms, chili and pepper production expanded notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. Chili and pepper production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The average yield of chilies and peppers (green) in Ghana reduced modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 3%. Over the period under review, the average chili and pepper yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of chilies and peppers (green) production in Ghana stood at X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 3%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to chili and pepper production reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Ghana
After seven years of decline, shipments abroad of chilies and peppers (green) increased by 5.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chili and pepper exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 72%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Benin (X tons) were the main destinations of chili and pepper exports from Ghana, with a combined 58% share of total exports. Switzerland, France, Ireland and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.2%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the UK ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest markets for chili and pepper exported from Ghana worldwide, together accounting for 55% of total exports. Switzerland, Ireland, Norway and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.3%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Norway, with a CAGR of +20.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average chili and pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -25.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chili and pepper export price increased by +80.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 92%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+33.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chili And Pepper Imports
Imports into Ghana
In 2022, approx. X tons of chilies and peppers (green) were imported into Ghana; picking up by 76% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 136%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chili and pepper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Morocco (X tons) constituted the largest chili and pepper supplier to Ghana, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, chili and pepper imports from Morocco exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Morocco totaled +74.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+9.6% per year) and Spain (+2.1% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chilies and peppers (green) to Ghana, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands stood at +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+75.3% per year) and Spain (+14.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average chili and pepper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -8.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 39%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
