In 2022, the Ghanian common clay market decreased by -7.4% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Common clay exports from Ghana contracted rapidly to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -50.8% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 405% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, common clay exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 807% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), China (X kg) and Burkina Faso (X kg) were the main destinations of common clay exports from Ghana, together comprising 47% of total exports. Togo, the UK, Turkey and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +33.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United States ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X) were the largest markets for common clay exported from Ghana worldwide, together comprising 71% of total exports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +46.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
The average common clay export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 79% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 93%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Common Clay Imports
Imports into Ghana
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of common clay, when their volume decreased by -7.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 470% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, common clay imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of common clay imports to Ghana, together accounting for 79% of total imports. India, Portugal, China and Sierra Leone lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.1%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +88.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of common clay to Ghana, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States amounted to +18.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+2.0% per year) and Lebanon (+38.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average common clay import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 569%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
