Coffee Substitutes Market Size in Ghana

The Ghanian coffee substitutes market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed strong growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the ninth consecutive year, Ghana recorded growth in overseas shipments of coffee substitutes containing coffee, which increased by 0.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee substitutes exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 122% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Gambia (X tons) was the main destination for coffee substitutes exports from Ghana, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee substitutes exports to Gambia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Nigeria (X tons), with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Gambia amounted to +251.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+39.3% per year) and Nigeria (+50.9% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Gambia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for coffee substitutes exported from Ghana worldwide, together accounting for 73% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Gambia, with a CAGR of +230.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average coffee substitutes export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+24.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana

In 2022, overseas purchases of coffee substitutes containing coffee increased by 197% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a precipitous decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee substitutes imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic descent. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Malaysia (X kg) were the main suppliers of coffee substitutes imports to Ghana, with a combined 90% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +55.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coffee substitutes containing coffee to Ghana, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+49.9% per year) and Malaysia (-32.2% per year).

In 2022, the average coffee substitutes import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -29.3% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coffee substitutes import price increased by +6.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 51%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
