Concentrated Apple Juice Market Size in Ghana

For the fourth year in a row, the Ghanian concentrated apple juice market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -18.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a precipitous shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Concentrated Apple Juice Exports

Exports from Ghana

In 2021, shipments abroad of concentrated apple juice increased by 2.6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 121%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, concentrated apple juice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) was the main destination for concentrated apple juice exports from Ghana, with a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, concentrated apple juice exports to Nigeria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burkina Faso (X kg), fivefold. Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Nigeria amounted to -15.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (-20.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+6.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for concentrated apple juice exported from Ghana were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), together accounting for 89% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +29.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average concentrated apple juice export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sierra Leone (+49.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Concentrated Apple Juice Imports

Imports into Ghana

In 2021, the amount of concentrated apple juice imported into Ghana dropped to X tons, with a decrease of -8% compared with the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 215%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, concentrated apple juice imports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 196% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) constituted the largest concentrated apple juice supplier to Ghana, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, concentrated apple juice imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Nigeria (X tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Africa stood at -19.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-14.6% per year) and Nigeria (-19.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest concentrated apple juice suppliers to Ghana were South Africa ($X), Germany ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports. Belgium, China, Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Among the main suppliers, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +5.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average concentrated apple juice import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -13.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
