Cotton Lint Market Size in Ghana

The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton lint exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 145%. Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for cotton lint exports from Ghana, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia (X tons), with a 2.4% share of total exports. The third position in this ranking was held by Bangladesh (X tons), with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia amounted to -11.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (-19.6% per year) and Bangladesh (-19.1% per year).

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for cotton lint exports from Ghana, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Malaysia amounted to -12.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (-21.3% per year) and Bangladesh (-20.8% per year).

The average cotton lint export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. Imports into Ghana

In 2022, the amount of cotton lint imported into Ghana fell sharply to X tons, reducing by -23.7% on the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 300% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cotton lint imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 509% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Burkina Faso (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the main suppliers of cotton lint imports to Ghana, together accounting for 100% of total imports.
