Electronic Chip Market Size in Ghana

In 2021, after six years of growth, there was decline in the Ghanian electronic chip market, when its value decreased by -3% to $X. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, exports of electronic chips from Ghana skyrocketed to X units, increasing by 78% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, faced a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 1,116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, electronic chip exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 690% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X units) was the main destination for electronic chip exports from Ghana, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, electronic chip exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Africa (X units), fourfold. Ethiopia (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +111.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+63.3% per year) and Ethiopia (0.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for electronic chips exports from Ghana, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at +119.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (0.0% per year) and Italy (+70.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average electronic chip export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 38% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 6,898,540% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to South Africa (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Ghana

In 2021, approx. X units of electronic chips were imported into Ghana; growing by 21% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 285%. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, electronic chip imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 763%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2021, France (X units) constituted the largest supplier of electronic chip to Ghana, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, electronic chip imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X units), with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from France totaled +33.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+62.4% per year) and Turkey (+27.9% per year).

In 2021, the average electronic chip import price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 124% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
