Ether Market Size in Ghana

For the fourth year in a row, the Ghanian ether market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 11% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a remarkable increase. Ether consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Ether Exports

Exports from Ghana

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of ethers increased by 2.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 115% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ether exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 253%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the main destination for ether exports from Ghana, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, ether exports to Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Cote d'Ivoire was relatively modest.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the key foreign market for ethers exports from Ghana, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +8.3%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average ether export price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Equatorial Guinea (+44.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Ether Imports

Imports into Ghana

In 2022, approx. X tons of ethers were imported into Ghana; surging by 47% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ether imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 118%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of ether imports to Ghana, with a combined 75% share of total imports. Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, China and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +84.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ethers to Ghana, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India amounted to +53.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+14.9% per year) and the UK (-9.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average ether import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -34.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (-3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
