Exports from Ghana
Ethanol exports from Ghana shrank markedly to X litres in 2022, which is down by -19.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 81%. The exports peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ethanol exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Togo (X litres) was the main destination for ethanol exports from Ghana, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, ethanol exports to Togo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Nigeria (X litres), sixfold. South Africa (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Togo stood at -4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+16.8% per year) and South Africa (+31.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for ethanol exported from Ghana were Togo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 90% of total exports. These countries were followed by Benin and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 8.1%.
Benin, with a CAGR of +43.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average ethanol export price amounted to $X per litre, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 55%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (-4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Ethanol Imports
Imports into Ghana
Ethanol imports into Ghana expanded remarkably to X litres in 2022, increasing by 8.8% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 112%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ethanol imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X litres), the United States (X litres) and Pakistan (X litres) were the main suppliers of ethanol imports to Ghana, together comprising 75% of total imports. These countries were followed by India, South Africa, Russia, Canada and France, which together accounted for a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +83.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ethyl alcohol to Ghana, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Brazil stood at +27.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+48.3% per year) and Pakistan (+5.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average ethanol import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a deep setback. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per litre), while the price for the United States ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (-2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
