For the fifth year in a row, Ghana recorded decline in shipments abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs, which decreased by -5.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 212%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, seafood meals and pellets exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 395% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main destinations of seafood meals and pellets exports from Ghana, together comprising 87% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +45.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Turkey ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest markets for seafood meals and pellets exported from Ghana worldwide, with a combined 88% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +46.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average seafood meals and pellets export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 58% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+90.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana

In 2021, overseas purchases of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs were finally on the rise to reach X tons after six years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a precipitous decline. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Mauritania (X tons) constituted the largest seafood meals and pellets supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, seafood meals and pellets imports from Mauritania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (X tons), with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Mauritania totaled -16.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+7.1% per year) and the United States (-21.9% per year).

In value terms, Mauritania ($X) constituted the largest supplier of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs to Ghana, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 4% share of total imports. It was followed by Seychelles, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Mauritania amounted to -23.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-2.9% per year) and Seychelles (-31.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average seafood meals and pellets import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -34% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 7.7%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while the price for Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (-3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
