Non-Corrugated Paper Box Market Size in Ghana

In 2022, the Ghanian non-corrugated paper box market decreased by -13.7% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded buoyant growth. Non-corrugated paper box consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

After three years of decline, overseas shipments of folding cartons, boxes and cases of non-corrugated paper or paperboard increased by 58% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 172%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-corrugated paper box exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 95%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo (X tons) and Benin (X tons) were the main destinations of non-corrugated paper box exports from Ghana.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Benin (with a CAGR of -1.9%).

In value terms, the largest markets for non-corrugated paper box exported from Ghana were Togo ($X) and Benin ($X).

Benin, with a CAGR of +7.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review.

In 2022, the average non-corrugated paper box export price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, non-corrugated paper box export price increased by +75.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana

In 2022, overseas purchases of folding cartons, boxes and cases of non-corrugated paper or paperboard decreased by -15.1% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 43%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, non-corrugated paper box imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest non-corrugated paper box supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, non-corrugated paper box imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India totaled +23.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+0.7% per year) and Germany (+77.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest non-corrugated paper box suppliers to Ghana were India ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 93% share of total imports.

Germany, with a CAGR of +66.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average non-corrugated paper box import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
