For the fifth year in a row, the Ghanian leather footwear market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 47% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate significant growth. In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of leather footwear, when their volume decreased by -11.3% to X tons. In general, exports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 193%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leather footwear exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Mali (X kg), Burkina Faso (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) were the main destinations of leather footwear exports from Ghana, with a combined 60% share of total exports. The United States, the Netherlands, South Africa and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +32.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the key foreign market for leather footwear exports from Ghana, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Burkina Faso totaled +13.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+6.9% per year) and the United States (+28.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average leather footwear export price stood at $X per kg in 2021, picking up by 52% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to Mali ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+23.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana
For the fifth consecutive year, Ghana recorded growth in purchases abroad of leather footwear, which increased by 43% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, leather footwear imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 170% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) was the main supplier of leather footwear to Ghana, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. It was followed by India (X tons), with a 2.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +39.7%.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather footwear to Ghana, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 2.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +28.8%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average leather footwear import price amounted to $X per kg, surging by 4.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per kg in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per kg), while the price for China stood at $X per kg.
