Frozen Chicken Cut Market Size in Ghana

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Ghanian frozen chicken cut market, when its value decreased by -13.4% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of frozen cuts of chicken increased by 9.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 164%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 405% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the main destination for frozen chicken cut exports from Ghana, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen chicken cut exports to Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Togo (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Cote d'Ivoire stood at -3.7%.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the key foreign market for frozen cuts of chicken exports from Ghana, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Cote d'Ivoire totaled -8.7%.

The average frozen chicken cut export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Togo (+13.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ghana

After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of frozen cuts of chicken decreased by -6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 130%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 136%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of frozen chicken cut imports to Ghana, with a combined 65% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +67.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the United States ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest frozen chicken cut suppliers to Ghana, with a combined 65% share of total imports.
