In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Ghanian prepared dish and meal market, when its value decreased by -22.8% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of prepared dishes and meals increased by 44% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 375%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared dish and meal exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 259% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the main destinations of prepared dish and meal exports from Ghana, with a combined 35% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Kuwait, Australia, Burkina Faso, Belgium and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +63.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for prepared dishes and meals exports from Ghana, comprising 24% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy stood at +58.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+68.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+61.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average prepared dish and meal export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana

In 2021, supplies from abroad of prepared dishes and meals decreased by -31.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, prepared dish and meal imports plummeted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest prepared dish and meal supplier to Ghana, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, prepared dish and meal imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), sixfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +7.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+40.9% per year) and India (+43.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of prepared dishes and meals to Ghana, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +4.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+28.6% per year) and the United States (+16.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average prepared dish and meal import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 21% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 45%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
