Ginger Market Size in Ghana

After four years of decline, the Ghanian ginger market increased by 70% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption saw prominent growth. Ginger consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ginger Production in Ghana

In value terms, ginger production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average ginger yield in Ghana skyrocketed to X tons per ha, increasing by 37% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a slight reduction. The ginger yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The ginger harvested area in Ghana totaled X ha in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 2.6%. The ginger harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Ghana

In 2022, shipments abroad of ginger decreased by -45.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 348%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ginger exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 262% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of ginger exports from Ghana, together accounting for 51% of total exports. Togo, Germany, Switzerland and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +408.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for ginger exports from Ghana, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK stood at +28.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+18.9% per year) and Belgium (-18.0% per year).

In 2022, the average ginger export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 306% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the third consecutive year, Ghana recorded decline in purchases abroad of ginger, which decreased by -17.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 4,749%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 9,193% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The UK (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of ginger imports to Ghana, with a combined 95% share of total imports. The Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 2.4%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +111.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X), the UK ($X) and India ($X) were the largest ginger suppliers to Ghana, together accounting for 97% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, which accounted for a further 1.2%.

In terms of the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +136.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average ginger import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 55% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
