Hop Market Size in Ghana

The Ghanian hop market declined markedly to $X in 2022, waning by -20.3% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded strong growth. Hop consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, imports of hops into Ghana fell to X tons, which is down by -12.8% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 191%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, hop imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 188% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hop to Ghana, with a 51% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States (X kg), with a 0.7% share of total imports. South Africa (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-21.0% per year) and South Africa (-13.1% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hops to Ghana, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 2.7% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 0.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +19.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-6.3% per year) and the UK (-17.3% per year).
