In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in the Ghanian hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites market, when its value increased by 1.2% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the fifth consecutive year, Ghana recorded decline in shipments abroad of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites, which decreased by -32.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 119%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 245%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso (X tons) was the main destination for hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports from Ghana, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports to Burkina Faso exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Guinea (X kg), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Togo (X kg), with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burkina Faso totaled +7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guinea (-23.4% per year) and Togo (-42.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exported from Ghana were Guinea ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together comprising 97% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +3.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites imports into Ghana dropped to X tons in 2022, declining by -9.4% compared with the year before. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 186%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 256% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 13% share.
