In 2021, the amount of inks (excluding printing ink) exported from Ghana dropped remarkably to X kg, shrinking by -58.9% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 2,887% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ink exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,886% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) was the main destination for ink exports from Ghana, with a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, ink exports to Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Togo (X kg), more than tenfold. Niger (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Cote d'Ivoire totaled +19.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (-3.1% per year) and Niger (+1.7% per year).
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the key foreign market for inks (excluding printing ink) exports from Ghana, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 2.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Cote d'Ivoire stood at +5.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sierra Leone (-12.7% per year) and Togo (-10.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average ink export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 151%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sierra Leone (+28.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ghana
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of inks (excluding printing ink), when their volume decreased by -46.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 272%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ink imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 204% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ink to Ghana, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, ink imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+28.8% per year) and India (-2.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest ink suppliers to Ghana were China ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, India, Mauritius, Turkey, the Netherlands and Canada, which together accounted for a further 11%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +37.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average ink import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 19% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, ink import price increased by +67.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+10.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
