In 2021, the Ghanian market for jams, jellies, puree and pastes was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the last nine-year period. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of jams, jellies, puree and pastes, when their volume increased by 4,379% to X tons. In general, exports posted a resilient expansion. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for jam, jelly, puree and paste exports from Ghana, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, jam, jelly, puree and paste exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Iceland (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at +25.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+30.2% per year) and Iceland (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Belgium ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for jams, jellies, puree and pastes exports from Ghana, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Iceland, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Belgium totaled +55.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+18.8% per year) and Iceland (0.0% per year).

In 2021, the average export price for jams, jellies, puree and pastes amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 44% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 158% against the previous year. In 2021, approx. X tons of jams, jellies, puree and pastes were imported into Ghana; increasing by 39% against 2020. In general, imports showed a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 5.6% share.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of jams, jellies, puree and pastes to Ghana, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands stood at +7.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+48.4% per year) and France (+8.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for jams, jellies, puree and pastes stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
