In 2021, the Ghanian laptop and tablet computer market increased by 17% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, consumption showed a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In 2021, overseas shipments of laptops and palm-top computers decreased by -21.4% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 555%. The exports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer exports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 429%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Sierra Leone (X units) was the main destination for laptop and tablet computer exports from Ghana, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, laptop and tablet computer exports to Sierra Leone exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cote d'Ivoire (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Nigeria (X units), with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sierra Leone stood at +49.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+60.8% per year) and Nigeria (+56.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for laptop and tablet computer exported from Ghana were Sierra Leone ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +92.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average laptop and tablet computer export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ghana

For the third year in a row, Ghana recorded growth in supplies from abroad of laptops and palm-top computers, which increased by 8.8% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 180%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 165% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X units), China (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main suppliers of laptop and tablet computer imports to Ghana, together accounting for 46% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +11.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest laptop and tablet computer suppliers to Ghana were the United Arab Emirates ($X), China ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 56% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average laptop and tablet computer import price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 48% against the previous year.
