Lead Market Size in Ghana
In 2022, the Ghanian lead market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a deep reduction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Lead Production in Ghana
In value terms, lead production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Lead production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Ghana
Lead exports from Ghana expanded remarkably to X tons in 2022, growing by 7.9% against the previous year. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 411%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lead exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 465% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main destinations of lead exports from Ghana, with a combined 60% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +57.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for lead exported from Ghana were the United States ($X), Turkey ($X) and Greece ($X), with a combined 63% share of total exports.
The United States, with a CAGR of +47.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lead export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 23%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United States ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lead Imports
Imports into Ghana
In 2022, supplies from abroad of lead decreased by -24.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 335%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lead imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 546% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of lead to Ghana, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, lead imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X kg), with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +64.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-20.8% per year) and India (+7.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), the UK ($X) and Australia ($X) constituted the largest lead suppliers to Ghana, with a combined 94% share of total imports.
China, with a CAGR of +44.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lead import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 136% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
