Lemon And Lime Market Size in Ghana

The Ghanian lemon and lime market totaled $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a modest increase. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 0.8%. The lemon and lime yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The lemon and lime harvested area in Ghana shrank to X ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 2.5%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to lemon and lime production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Ghana

In 2022, shipments abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -12.5% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 8,701% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 6,387%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X kg), the UK (X kg) and Croatia (X kg) were the main destinations of lemon and lime exports from Ghana, with a combined 64% share of total exports. Germany and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +32.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Croatia ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the largest markets for lemon and lime exported from Ghana worldwide, with a combined 51% share of total exports. The Netherlands and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.4%.

France, with a CAGR of +31.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average lemon and lime export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lemon and lime export price increased by +58.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Ghana

In 2022, purchases abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -4.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 150% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the main suppliers of lemon and lime imports to Ghana, together comprising 50% of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain, Brazil, the United States and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +78.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Israel ($X), South Africa ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest lemon and lime suppliers to Ghana, together accounting for 50% of total imports. Spain, Morocco, Brazil, Egypt and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Among the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +49.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average lemon and lime import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 70%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
