Matches Market Size in Ghana

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Ghanian matches market, when its value decreased by -1.7% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Matches consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of matches increased by 3.3% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 534%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, matches exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. Togo (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons) were the main destinations of matches exports from Ghana, together accounting for 94% of total exports.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of matches, when their volume decreased by -2.4% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +58.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, matches imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest matches supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, matches imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (X tons), sixfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India stood at +15.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-12.6% per year) and China (+32.2% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of matches to Ghana, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India totaled +12.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-13.0% per year) and China (+29.4% per year).
