The Ghanian non-wheat flour market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -11.8% against 2019 indices. In 2021, shipments abroad of non-wheat flours increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 267%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 135%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of non-wheat flour exports from Ghana, together comprising 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, Cote d'Ivoire, Ireland, Finland, Australia, Belgium and Niger, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +63.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-wheat flours exports from Ghana, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +29.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+19.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+20.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average non-wheat flour export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+15.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of non-wheat flours, when their volume decreased by -32.2% to X tons. In general, imports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 594%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 1,025%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) constituted the largest non-wheat flour supplier to Ghana, with a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, non-wheat flour imports from Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), sixfold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Nigeria amounted to +82.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (-12.5% per year) and Belgium (-25.6% per year).

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-wheat flours to Ghana, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Nigeria amounted to +83.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+10.7% per year) and Belgium (-16.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average non-wheat flour import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 62%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
