Candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Ghana reduced sharply to X tons in 2022, waning by -76.6% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 78%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Togo (X tons), Niger (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Ghana, with a combined 94% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of -16.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest markets for candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exported from Ghana were the United States ($X), Niger ($X) and Togo ($X), together accounting for 92% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Niger, with a CAGR of -11.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Imports into Ghana
In 2022, supplies from abroad of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery decreased by -42.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), India (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports to Ghana, together accounting for 88% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +12.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery to Ghana, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+4.8% per year) and Turkey (+11.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
