Over the period under review, imports, however, showed moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 225% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 146% against the previous year. In 2022, Niger (X tons) constituted the largest onion and shallot supplier to Ghana, with a 79% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Niger amounted to +7.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (+72.1% per year) and Burkina Faso (-13.2% per year).

In value terms, Niger ($X) constituted the largest supplier of onions and shallots to Ghana, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 6% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Niger stood at +8.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+8.9% per year) and Burkina Faso (-14.0% per year).

The average onion and shallot import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
