In 2021, supplies from abroad of ophthalmic instruments and appliances was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ophthalmic instruments imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 229% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest ophthalmic instruments supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, ophthalmic instruments imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X kg), fivefold.
