Potato Market Size in Ghana

In 2021, the Ghanian potato market decreased by -10.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, posted a prominent increase. Potato consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of potatoes decreased by -31.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 188%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 205%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Ghana, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo (X tons), with a 2.9% share of total exports. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X tons), with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France totaled +44.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (-34.3% per year) and the UK (+18.5% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato exports from Ghana, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to France totaled +11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+9.8% per year) and the United States (-33.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average potato export price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 159%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Potato Imports

Imports into Ghana

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of potatoes decreased by -14.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, potato imports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Ghana, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Africa (X tons), with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +49.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+70.7% per year) and South Africa (+18.2% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Ghana, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +51.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+71.5% per year) and South Africa (+9.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average potato import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
