Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2021, overseas purchases of potato starch increased by 78% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 191% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato starch imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 341% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato starch imports to Ghana, together comprising 60% of total imports. China, Hong Kong SAR, the United States and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +127.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest potato starch suppliers to Ghana were the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 49% share of total imports. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 52%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
