Reclaimed Rubber Market Size in Ghana

In 2021, the Ghanian reclaimed rubber market increased by 4.4% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw a perceptible increase. Reclaimed rubber consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports from Ghana

In 2021, shipments abroad of reclaimed rubber increased by 147% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 691%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, reclaimed rubber exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) was the main destination for reclaimed rubber exports from Ghana, accounting for a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, reclaimed rubber exports to Nigeria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cote d'Ivoire (X kg), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Nigeria was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+21.7% per year) and Burkina Faso (-30.5% per year).

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for reclaimed rubber exports from Ghana, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Nigeria was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+29.8% per year) and Burkina Faso (-37.5% per year).

In 2021, the average reclaimed rubber export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 90% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 154%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cote d'Ivoire (+6.8%).

Imports into Ghana

In 2021, approx. X tons of reclaimed rubber were imported into Ghana; picking up by 9.5% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports posted a notable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 67%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, reclaimed rubber imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main reclaimed rubber supplier to Ghana, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +5.0%.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of reclaimed rubber to Ghana.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +9.2%.

Import Prices by Country

The average reclaimed rubber import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -5.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
