Sorghum Market Size in Ghana

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 5,374% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 7,985%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Burkina Faso (X kg) was the main destination for sorghum exports from Ghana, with a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to Burkina Faso exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X kg), twofold. Ireland (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burkina Faso totaled -6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (-21.3% per year) and Ireland (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from Ghana, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ireland ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Burkina Faso totaled +3.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ireland (0.0% per year) and Canada (-27.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sorghum export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -4.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 131%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Sorghum imports into Ghana rose remarkably to X tons in 2022, surging by 12% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1,061%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 1,100%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, India (X tons) was the main supplier of sorghum to Ghana, with a approx. 100% share of total imports.
