Exports from Ghana
After three years of decline, shipments abroad of sparkling wine increased by 520% to X litres in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The exports peaked at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sparkling wine exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire (X litres) was the main destination for sparkling wine exports from Ghana, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, sparkling wine exports to Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Togo (X litres), tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Cote d'Ivoire totaled -4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (-18.3% per year) and Burkina Faso (-27.6% per year).
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the key foreign market for sparkling wine exports from Ghana, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Cote d'Ivoire totaled -10.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (-30.5% per year) and Burkina Faso (-43.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sparkling wine export price amounted to $X per litre, with a decrease of -33.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 46% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Burkina Faso ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (-5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sparkling Wine Imports
Imports into Ghana
After seven years of growth, overseas purchases of sparkling wine decreased by -22.2% to X litres in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 505% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, sparkling wine imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 546% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X litres) constituted the largest sparkling wine supplier to Ghana, with a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, sparkling wine imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X litres), sixfold. Ukraine (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from France amounted to +37.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+54.9% per year) and Ukraine (+51.1% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sparkling wine to Ghana, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 4.9% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from France amounted to +44.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+5.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+90.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average sparkling wine import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 167%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per litre), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+16.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
