In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the key foreign market for sulphuric acid and oleum exports from Ghana, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.

The average sulphuric acid export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+11.0%).

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sulphuric acid and oleum decreased by -6.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 277%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, sulphuric acid imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 275%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of sulphuric acid imports to Ghana, together comprising 64% of total imports. The Netherlands, the UK and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.9%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +56.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Belgium ($X) and India ($X) constituted the largest sulphuric acid suppliers to Ghana, together accounting for 59% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +31.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average sulphuric acid import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -8.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 36%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
