In 2021, the Ghanian market for sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers increased by 61% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. Sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers increased by 42% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 85%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the main destinations of sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer exports from Ghana, together accounting for 80% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +63.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer exported from Ghana worldwide, together accounting for 66% of total exports.

Togo, with a CAGR of +69.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average export price for sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

India (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer imports to Ghana, with a combined 49% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +50.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X), the UK ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the largest sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer suppliers to Ghana, with a combined 49% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Turkey, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, China, Morocco, Malaysia, Indonesia, Argentina and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 38%.

Among the main suppliers, Morocco, with a CAGR of +39.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+18.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
