Tomato Market Size in Ghana

The Ghanian tomato market declined modestly to $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +1.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 125% against the previous year. Tomato production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average tomato yield in Ghana was estimated at X tons per ha, flattening at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 5.7% against the previous year. The tomato yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of tomatoes production in Ghana totaled X ha, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 3%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to tomato production reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports from Ghana

In 2022, approx. X tons of tomatoes were exported from Ghana; surging by 12% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso (X kg) was the main destination for tomato exports from Ghana, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to Burkina Faso exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Niger (X kg), fourfold. The United States (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burkina Faso amounted to -31.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Niger (-12.1% per year) and the United States (+3.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for tomato exported from Ghana were the United States ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Niger ($X), together comprising 85% of total exports.

The United States, with a CAGR of +12.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tomato export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -33.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 409%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+12.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of tomatoes, when their volume increased by 2.1% to X tons. In general, imports, however, faced a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, faced a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Burkina Faso (X tons) was the main tomato supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco (X tons), with a 2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Burkina Faso totaled -10.5%.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomatoes to Ghana, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 4.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Burkina Faso stood at -12.5%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the price for Burkina Faso stood at $X per ton.
