Travel Set Market Size in Ghana

In 2021, the Ghanian travel set market decreased by -20.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, posted a prominent expansion. Travel set consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of travel sets increased by 135% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 533% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, travel set exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 495%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X units) was the main destination for travel set exports from Ghana, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, travel set exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burkina Faso (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Niger (X units), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands stood at +37.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (-13.3% per year) and Niger (-2.4% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for travel sets exports from Ghana, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burkina Faso ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK amounted to +28.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (-3.3% per year) and the Netherlands (-3.1% per year).

In 2021, the average travel set export price amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -23.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+19.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of travel sets increased by 6% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 67%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, travel set imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 173%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest travel set supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, travel set imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Turkey (X units), with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+51.3% per year) and Turkey (+17.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of travel sets to Ghana, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 5.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Canada, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +23.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-22.8% per year) and Canada (+25.4% per year).

The average travel set import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while the price for Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
