Turkey Meat Market Size in Ghana
In 2022, the Ghanian turkey meat market decreased by -18.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, posted a prominent increase. Turkey meat consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

After five years of decline, overseas shipments of turkey meat increased by 2.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a sharp reduction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, turkey meat exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Benin (X tons) was the main destination for turkey meat exports from Ghana, accounting for a 95% share of total exports. Moreover, turkey meat exports to Benin exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Togo (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Benin amounted to -15.0%.
In value terms, Benin ($X) remains the key foreign market for turkey meat exports from Ghana, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Benin totaled -9.9%.
Export Prices by Country
The average turkey meat export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Togo (+6.5%).
Turkey Meat Imports
Imports into Ghana
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of turkey meat, when their volume decreased by -12.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 428%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, turkey meat imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 434% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest turkey meat supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 19% share of total imports. Moreover, turkey meat imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), fourfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands totaled +61.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+2.3% per year) and France (+11.8% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of turkey meat to Ghana, comprising 19% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 5% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands amounted to +55.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+4.1% per year) and Brazil (-2.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average turkey meat import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 24%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
