After four years of growth, the Ghanian twine and cordage market decreased by -5% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a notable expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports from Ghana
Twine and cordage exports from Ghana soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 49% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 520% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, twine and cordage exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 599% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for twine and cordage exports from Ghana, with a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, twine and cordage exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Togo (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Burkina Faso (X kg), with less than 0.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at +29.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+9.8% per year) and Burkina Faso (-51.4% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for twine, cordage, rope and cables exports from Ghana, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 0.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with less than 0.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +52.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (-37.0% per year) and Burkina Faso (-54.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average twine and cordage export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 9.6% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, twine and cordage export price increased by +97.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 54% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+18.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Twine And Cordage Imports
Imports into Ghana
In 2022, overseas purchases of twine, cordage, rope and cables decreased by -0.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, twine and cordage imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Korea (X tons), India (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of twine and cordage imports to Ghana, together accounting for 92% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +15.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest twine and cordage suppliers to Ghana were China ($X), South Korea ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 87% share of total imports.
India, with a CAGR of +10.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average twine and cordage import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
