Urea Market Size in Ghana

In 2022, the Ghanian urea market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a significant expansion. Urea consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of urea decreased by -21.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 257% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, urea exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 293%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso (X tons) was the main destination for urea exports from Ghana, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo (X tons), with a 1.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burkina Faso totaled +15.7%.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the key foreign market for urea exports from Ghana, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Burkina Faso stood at +17.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The average urea export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+1.3%).

Urea Imports

Imports into Ghana

In 2022, purchases abroad of urea was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 508%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, urea imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 569%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Libya (X tons) were the main suppliers of urea imports to Ghana, with a combined 61% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +60.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Estonia ($X), Finland ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the largest urea suppliers to Ghana, together comprising 50% of total imports.

Russia, with a CAGR of +46.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average urea import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -16.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 16%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
