Vegetable Product Market Size in Ghana

The Ghanian vegetable product market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, reducing by -2.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 1.4% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the average vegetable product yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of vegetable products, when their volume decreased by -40.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 686% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable product exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 779% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of vegetable product exports from Ghana, with a combined 60% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +135.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for vegetable product exported from Ghana were France ($X), the United States ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 52% of total exports. Canada, Belgium and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+18.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana

For the third consecutive year, Ghana recorded growth in purchases abroad of vegetable products, which increased by 80% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 166%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable product imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 258% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Niger (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of vegetable product imports to Ghana, together comprising 89% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +97.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of vegetable products to Ghana, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled +83.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Niger (-2.1% per year) and South Africa (+24.5% per year).

The average vegetable product import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 329%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
