Exports by Country
Burkina Faso (X tons) was the main destination for watermelon exports from Ghana, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, watermelon exports to Burkina Faso exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Niger (X tons), ninefold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burkina Faso stood at +67.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Niger (+14.4% per year) and the UK (+47.3% per year).
In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for watermelon exported from Ghana worldwide, together comprising 70% of total exports.
Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +73.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average watermelon export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 60%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cote d'Ivoire (+29.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana
Watermelon imports into Ghana expanded remarkably to X tons in 2022, picking up by 10% on the year before. Overall, imports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 329% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, watermelon imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 246%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of watermelon imports to Ghana, together accounting for 66% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +125.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the largest watermelon suppliers to Ghana, with a combined 59% share of total imports.
South Africa, with a CAGR of +97.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average watermelon import price amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 100% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+30.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
