Exports from Ghana
In 2022, overseas shipments of whisky increased by 370% to X litres for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a precipitous contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 1,392%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whisky exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1,324% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Nigeria (X litres) and Togo (X litres) were the main destinations of whisky exports from Ghana, with a combined 77% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the key foreign market for whisky exports from Ghana, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +35.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+1.2% per year) and Burkina Faso (-33.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average whisky export price amounted to $X per litre, falling by -14.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 52%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Benin ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+16.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana
In 2022, supplies from abroad of whisky decreased by -10.8% to X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 205%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, whisky imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X litres) constituted the largest whisky supplier to Ghana, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, whisky imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X litres), sixfold. France (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +12.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+9.4% per year) and France (+4.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest whisky suppliers to Ghana were India ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Cameroon and Mauritius, which together accounted for a further 8.6%.
Mauritius, with a CAGR of +61.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average whisky import price amounted to $X per litre, dropping by -6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 28%. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while the price for Mauritius ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
