In 2021, the Ghanian wine market increased by 155% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a notable expansion. In 2021, shipments abroad of wine decreased by -81.9% to X litres, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 227%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Togo (X litres) and Nigeria (X litres) were the main destinations of wine exports from Ghana, with a combined 100% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +96.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the key foreign market for wine exports from Ghana, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Cote d'Ivoire stood at +18.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+8.7% per year) and Nigeria (+117.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wine export price amounted to $X per litre, declining by -6.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 67% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+10.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ghana
For the third year in a row, Ghana recorded growth in purchases abroad of wine, which increased by 87% to X litres in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, wine imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Spain (X litres), Togo (X litres) and South Africa (X litres) were the main suppliers of wine imports to Ghana, together accounting for 57% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +49.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest wine suppliers to Ghana were Spain ($X), Togo ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Togo, with a CAGR of +43.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wine import price amounted to $X per litre, with a decrease of -8.7% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wine import price decreased by -34.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per litre), while the price for Togo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
