Yams Market Size in Ghana

The Ghanian yams market fell to $X in 2022, dropping by -2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Yams Production in Ghana

In value terms, yams production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 15%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of yams in Ghana reduced to X tons per ha, flattening at the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 7.8% against the previous year. The yams yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports from Ghana

Yams exports from Ghana fell modestly to X tons in 2022, dropping by -3.4% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, yams exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), the UK (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main destinations of yams exports from Ghana, together accounting for 76% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +53.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), the UK ($X) and Canada ($X) constituted the largest markets for yams exported from Ghana worldwide, together accounting for 81% of total exports. The Netherlands, South Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +51.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average yams export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ghana

In 2022, imports of yams into Ghana fell modestly to X tons, flattening at the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 873% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, yams imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1,761% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) was the main yams supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, yams imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States totaled -1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-12.1% per year) and Germany (-0.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of yams to Ghana, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+0.2% per year) and Germany (-5.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average yams import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 91%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
