The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Greece was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 37% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Australia (10%), China (7.4%), South Africa (6.4%) and Indonesia (4.9%). India (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +63.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Australia ($X), China ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 48% of global exports. These countries were followed by South Africa, India, Greece and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 19%.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +54.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average abrasives export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 28%. Global imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons) and China (X tons) were the largest importers of abrasives (natural) in 2021, resulting at near 17% and 12% of total imports, respectively. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.9% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (6.7%) and Bangladesh (5.7%). Saudi Arabia (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Germany (X tons), Canada (X tons), Russia (X tons), France (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 30% share of global imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +17.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average abrasives import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 7.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
