The global avocado market reached $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a buoyant increase. Global consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Avocado Production
In value terms, avocado production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 23%. Over the period under review, global production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Mexico (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of avocado production, accounting for 28% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Peru (X tons), twofold. Colombia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Mexico amounted to +6.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (+14.3% per year) and Colombia (+13.5% per year).
The global average avocado yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 4.7%. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of avocados were harvested worldwide; waning by -3% compared with 2021. In general, the total harvested area indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, avocado harvested area increased by +73.8% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to avocado production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of avocados, when their volume decreased by -8.1% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, avocado exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 33%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Mexico (X tons) and Peru (X tons) represented roughly 58% of total exports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Chile (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons) and the United States (X tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +67.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest avocado supplying countries worldwide were Mexico ($X), Peru ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 75% of global exports. Spain, Chile, Colombia, the United States, Morocco, Kenya, South Africa and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
Among the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +67.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average avocado export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+6.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of avocados, when their volume decreased by -7.5% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, avocado imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons) was the main importer of avocados, mixing up 38% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Spain (6.8%) and France (6.8%). Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons), Canada (X tons), Chile (X tons), Russia (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Italy (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to avocado imports into the United States stood at +8.5%. At the same time, Chile (+56.0%), Italy (+24.8%), Spain (+19.5%), Russia (+16.3%), Germany (+15.8%), the Netherlands (+13.9%), the UK (+11.9%), France (+7.8%) and Canada (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +56.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Japan (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+3.8 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3.2 p.p.), Chile (+2 p.p.) and Germany (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-1.8 p.p.), Japan (-3.6 p.p.) and the United States (-7.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported avocados worldwide, comprising 42% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of global imports. It was followed by France, with a 6.8% share.
In the United States, avocado imports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+17.1% per year) and France (+10.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average avocado import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 18%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
