Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the market value increased by 9.7%. In 2021, global exports of bismuth skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 37% against 2020. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, bismuth exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The global exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 49% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by South Korea (8.1%), the United States (7.9%) and Belgium (6.5%). Kazakhstan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Japan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bismuth exports from China stood at +3.7%. At the same time, Vietnam (+117.8%), Belgium (+81.2%), the Netherlands (+36.0%), Kazakhstan (+24.1%), Japan (+19.3%), South Korea (+12.3%) and the United States (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +117.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of the Netherlands (+10 p.p.), Belgium (+6.4 p.p.), South Korea (+3.4 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+2.7 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of the United States (-2.9 p.p.) and China (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest bismuth supplier worldwide, comprising 40% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 14% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at -7.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United States (+6.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+21.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average bismuth export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.5%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of bismuth was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 20%. Global imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, bismuth imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 29%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of bismuth imports in 2021 were the Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), China (X tons), Italy (X tons), Japan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), India (X tons) and South Korea (X tons), together recording 85% of total import.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +137.9%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest bismuth importing markets worldwide were the Netherlands ($X), the United States ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 42% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, Belgium, South Korea, China, Vietnam, Italy, Japan, India and Lao People's Democratic Republic, which together accounted for a further 37%.
Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +53.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average bismuth import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 9.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 21%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
