The global cabbage market reached $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 11%. Global production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons) remains the largest cabbage producing country worldwide, accounting for 48% of total volume. Moreover, cabbage production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Korea (X tons), with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+1.1% per year) and South Korea (+0.9% per year).

The global average cabbage yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 2.3%. Over the period under review, the average cabbage yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 9.9% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, China (X tons), distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) were the key exporters of cabbage and other brassicas, together constituting 59% of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Poland (X tons), North Macedonia (X tons), Canada (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) - together made up 24% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+28.4%), Guatemala (+24.9%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+22.4%), Mexico (+13.1%), North Macedonia (+5.9%), Canada (+5.2%), Spain (+4.8%) and Italy (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +28.4% from 2012-2022. Germany and the Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-3.0%) and the United States (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mexico (+7.7 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+4.6 p.p.) and Guatemala (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-3 p.p.), Poland (-3.2 p.p.) and the United States (-6.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cabbage supplying countries worldwide were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Mexico ($X), with a combined 52% share of global exports. The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Canada, Poland, North Macedonia, Germany, Uzbekistan, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +31.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cabbage export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -12.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 9.8%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the major importers of cabbage and other brassicas, together committing 53% of total imports.
