The global camel meat market fell slightly to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the global market remained at a lower figure.
Camel Meat Production
In value terms, camel meat production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 9.3%. Global production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Sudan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), with a combined 50% share of global production. Somalia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, China, Mauritania, Oman, Mongolia, Niger, Turkmenistan and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mongolia (with a CAGR of +9.4%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the global average camel meat yield amounted to X kg per head, almost unchanged from 2021. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average camel meat yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.
In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for camel meat production worldwide reached X heads, approximately equating the year before. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number attained the peak level at X heads in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.
Camel Meat Exports
Exports
After two years of decline, overseas shipments of camel meat increased by 2.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 54%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, camel meat exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the largest exporter of camel meat in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2022. Australia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Pakistan (23%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +178.2%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Australia ($X) and Pakistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 100% share of global exports.
Pakistan, with a CAGR of +208.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average camel meat export price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+11.0%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Camel Meat Imports
Imports
In 2022, overseas purchases of camel meat decreased by -3.3% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 170% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, camel meat imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 187%. Global imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Oman (X tons) represented the key importer of camel meat, comprising 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons) and the United States (X tons), together constituting a 22% share of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to camel meat imports into Oman stood at +52.3%. At the same time, the United States (+70.4%), Kuwait (+42.8%) and Morocco (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United States emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +70.4% from 2012-2022. Oman (+65 p.p.), Morocco (+15 p.p.), the United States (+6.8 p.p.) and Kuwait (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Oman ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported camel meat worldwide, comprising 65% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 17% share of global imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 13% share.
In Oman, camel meat imports increased at an average annual rate of +51.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+3.5% per year) and the United States (+61.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average camel meat import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 6.1%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+0.7%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
