The global cashew nut market shrank to $X in 2021, reducing by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. In value terms, cashew nut production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -34.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 40%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were India (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), with a combined 38% share of global production. Ghana, Vietnam, Tanzania, Burundi, the Philippines, Benin, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Burkina Faso and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Mali (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the global average cashew nut yield dropped modestly to X kg per ha, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average cashew nut yield hit record highs at X kg per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The global cashew nut harvested area reduced modestly to X ha in 2021, waning by -3.6% against 2020 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cashew nut production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of cashew nuts decreased by -40.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports showed a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, cashew nut exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Benin (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Guinea-Bissau (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together recording 75% of total export. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together generating a 9.3% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +22.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average cashew nut export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Guinea-Bissau ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+7.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cashew nuts decreased by -41.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut imports plummeted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

India represented the major importer of cashew nuts in the world, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), creating a 28% share of total imports.

India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cashew nuts. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cashew nuts worldwide, comprising 72% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 23% share of global imports.
