The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +54.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +64.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), the United States (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Canada (X tons), Chile (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the key exporter of dissolving grade wood pulp in the world, mixing up 88% of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +111.5%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), the United States ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 52% share of global exports. Brazil, Sweden, Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +137.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average dissolving grade wood pulp export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+22.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of dissolving grade wood pulp, when their volume decreased by -0.3% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the major importer of dissolving grade wood pulp, committing 55% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), Germany (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and the United States (X tons), together making up a 31% share of total imports. The following importers - Thailand (X tons) and Japan (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total imports.
Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+14.8%) and Thailand (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012-2022. The United States and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.2%) and Japan (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+18 p.p.) and India (+8.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the United States, Germany and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -2.5% and -3.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dissolving grade wood pulp worldwide, comprising 55% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 12% share of global imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +6.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+12.6% per year) and Indonesia (+0.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average dissolving grade wood pulp import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+2.1%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
